TOLEDO, OH – The University at Buffalo baseball team used solid starting pitching and a 12-hit performance to defeat the host Toledo Rockets, 9-3, Saturday afternoon at Scott Park. With the victory UB improves its record to 3-21 on the year and 2-6 in conference play.

The Bulls got ahead with a four-run second inning and never looked back as senior Mike Radanovic (Surrey, British Columbia/L.A. Matheson) gave UB seven solid innings, allowing just one run, for his first victory of the season.

Chris Ciesla (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) began the inning with a double to right center and advanced to third on a wild pitch. After Nick Walczak (Tonawanda, NY/Kenmore East) was hit by a pitch, junior Tony Fuller (Rochester, NY/Penfield) singled down the left field line to drive in Ciesla and move Walczak to second. Freshman Bobby Pizzuto (Mentor, OH)/Notre Dame Cathedral) then singled up the middle to drive in Walczak. The Bulls would get their final two runs of the inning when freshman Shivam Bhan (Caledon, Ontario/Mayfield) doubled to left center, scoring Pizzuto and Fuller.

Toledo picked up one run in the bottom of the second, but that is all Radanovic would allow, striking out seven batters in his seven innings of work. In the top of the seventh, UB added three more runs, putting together a rally with two outs. Eric Flynn (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Falls) hit a two-out double to right center and scored as Ciesla hit his second double of the game, this time to left center. Walczak was again hit by a pitch and both runners advanced on a passed ball. Fuller then doubled to center field, driving in both runs.

Sophomore Zach Anderson (Williamsville, NY/ Williamsville East) came in to pitch the final two innings and struck out three batters during his appearance. Anderson did allow two runs in the bottom of the eighth, but UB answered in the top of the ninth with two runs of their own.

Ciesla hit a one-out single up the middle and advanced to second on a single by Walczak. Fuller then followed that up with UB’s third straight single, advancing Walczak to third. Ciesla was thrown out trying to score. After Fuller stole second, Pizzuto singled through the right side, scoring Fuller and Walczak.

Anderson came back out in the ninth inning and despite hitting one batter, finished the game out for the Bulls.

The four through seven hitters for UB went a combined 10-for-18 in the game, helping UB to its first conference road victory. Ciesla went 4-for-5 on the afternoon, while Walczak scored three times for the Bulls. Fuller and Pizzuto each had three RBIs on the day, while Bhan added two.

The two teams will meet in the rubber match of the three-game series on Sunday afternoon with a 1:00 pm first pitch.
