BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo baseball team began to display its power, but was unable to defeat Canisius, falling 11-5 to the Golden Griffins, Wednesday afternoon at the Demske Sport Complex. The loss drops UB to 2-20 on the season.

After only hitting one home run through their first 21 games of the season, the Bulls used the long ball often against the Golden Flashes. Sophomore Chris Ciesla (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) hit two home runs on the day, one in the second and one in the forth, accounting for UB’s first two runs of the game. After Ciesla crossed the plate again in the sixth, junior Rick Oliveri (Tonawanda, NY/Canisius) hit a two-run shot to left field, pulling UB within one.

The Golden Griffins responded by scoring five unanswered runs, including four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. UB tired to put together one last threat in the top of the ninth inning by loading the bases with nobody out. However, UB would get no closer as the next three batters all made outs.

Ciesla led the way for UB, going 3-for-3 on the afternoon. Ciesla also saw action on the mound, pitching three innings. Junior Nick Walczak (Tonawanda, NY/Kenmore East) went 3-for-4 in the game with a double and a run scored. The Bulls were able to record 12 hits, including two from Oliveri, who finished with two runs batted in.

James Flatley (Elma, NY/Iroquois) picked up the loss for UB as he went two innings, while allowing five runs. Besides Flatley and Ciesla, Dan Francis (East Amherst, NY/Clarence) and Kori Korinek (Cuyahoga Falls, NY/Woodridge) saw action on the mound.

The Bulls continue MAC play this weekend when they travel to Toledo for a three-game set. The first game will be on Friday, April 6 with first pitch coming at 3:00 pm.
