Bulls Drop Heartbreaker to Canisius, 8-7

Late rally gives Griffins the victory

BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo baseball team dropped an 8-7 decision to Canisius College Tuesday afternoon in the Bulls' first home contest of the year. The game, originally scheduled for Dunn Tire Park, was moved to Canisius' Demske Complex with UB serving as the host team.

Following a first-inning home run by Canisius shortstop Bill Doll and RBI double by Jerry Burke in the second, the Bulls put up four runs in their half of the second to lead 4-2. Bryan Sanchez (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua Academy) led the inning off with a single, moved to third following a Canisius error and scored on Corey Blair's (Oneida, NY/Oneida) sacrifice fly. Adrian Daniels (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport) followed with an RBI double to score Joe Todoro (Orchard Park/Orchard Park) and Tim Sova (Rochester, NY/Greece-Athena) broke the tie with a two-RBI single.

Canisius cut the gap to 4-3 in the third when leadoff hitter Kyle Domogala singled and moved to second on an error by Daniels. Chris Shanahan followed with a bunt in front of the plate that catcher Brandon DiCesare (Rochester, NY/McQuaid Jesuit) threw wide of third to allow Domogala to score.

DiCesare answered for the Bulls in the bottom of the third as he led off with a double, to extend his hit streak to 14 games. He scored when Canisius catcher John Cicero threw wildly in an attempt to get DiCesare at third after Alex Nimigon had uncorked a wild pitch, making the score 5-3. Todoro then followed with his second home run of the season, a solo shot to give the Bulls a 6-3 lead. UB added a seventh run in the fourth as Eric Huber (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) drove home Daniels with a single.

Canisius closed to 7-6 in the seventh when UB starter Tyler Balentine (Mendon, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) allowed consecutive walks to Cicero and Eric Posa. Domogala followed with a three-run homer to right-center. Balentine was then relieved by Nick Bellacose (Clarence, NY/Clarence).

The Griffins got the winning runs in the eighth as Burke walked to open the inning and came around to score on Jesse Burdick's double to the left field corner, tying the game 7-7. After Bellacose picked up two outs, Burdick scored the go-ahead run on Shanahan's RBI single.

The Bulls mounted a rally in the ninth as DiCesare doubled for the second time in the game. However, he was stranded as Mike Flaherty (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport) struck out to end the contest.

Canisius pitcher Jon Lilley picked up his first win of the year, allowing just two hits in the final 5.2 innings. Bellacose took the loss to fall to 0-2.

The Bulls are now 6-17 overall while Canisius improves to 7-9. UB heads to Bowling Green for a four-game Mid-American Conference series this weekend.
