Bulls Baseball on a Three Game Winning StreakBulls on Three-Game Winning Streak With a doubleheader sweep at Binghamton, the UB Bulls extended their winning streak to three games. UB defeated Binghamton 5-2 and 4-0 in the sweep behind some great pitching performances. In the first game, Tyler Balentine (Mendon, NY/Honeoye Falls) pitched a complete game and improved his record to a perfect 3-0 on the season. Balentine went 7.0 innings, giving up two runs, one earned and just four hits. The hitting stars for UB were Mike Flaherty (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport) who went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Kevin Brown (Amherst, NY/Amherst Central) who was 2-for-4. In the second game, UB senior Tom Januchowski (Depew, NY/Lancaster) almost made history as he pitched a complete game, one-hit shutout and carried a no-hitter into the final inning. Januchowski went 7.0 innings, giving up no runs and one hit while striking out seven. He took a no-hitter into the top of the seventh before giving up a lead-off single in that final inning. Scott Mruczek (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) went 2-for-2 from the plate with three RBIs and his first home run of the season in the win. UB Splits with Pittsburgh, Drops Two at Duquesne The Bulls went to Pittsburgh, PA, for a couple of doubleheaders at Duquesne and at Pittsburgh. At Duquesne, the Bulls dropped both games of a doubleheader, losing 3-0 in each game. Jeff Robertson (Kenmore, NY/Kenmore West) took a loss to fall to 0-3 on the year and Pete Selden (Holley, NY/Holley) fell to 1-1. Against Pittsburgh, UB lost the first game 8-3 as Matt Rogan (Cattaraugus, NY/Cattaraugus Central) took the loss. In the second game, Brandon DiCesare (Rochester, NY/McQuaid Jesuit) led the team to a 3-2 win as he went 2-for-3 from the plate with two runs scored. Scott Mruczek knocked in the winning run in the last inning as Tom Januchowski picked up the win in relief. Bulls Ready to Play at Dunn Tire Park Dunn Tire Park, home of the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons, will also be the home field this season for the Buffalo Bulls baseball team. UB will play 12 of their 18 home games at Dunn Tire Park. The first home game will be April 4, against Pittsburgh at 1 pm. At the Plate Junior Kevin Brown leads the Bulls from the plate, hitting .338 (27-for-80) on the year. His 27 hits are a team-high as well. Charlie Smilinich (Tonawanda, NY/Tonawanda) has a team-high five doubles and Brown and Adrian Daniels (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport) have two triples each. Bryan Sanchez (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua Academy) leads the team in power, as he has collected five home runs on the season and leads the team with 15 RBIs as well. His five homers puts him one shy of tenth place for home runs in a season for the UB record books. The season record is nine, set by three players. UB has 12 home runs as a team, with eight different players going long this season. Tossing a Shutout Senior Tom Januchowski threw a complete game, one-hit shutout in a 4-0 win at Binghamton (4/2) to record his third win of the season and the team's third-straight win overall. It was the first shutout of the season for the Bulls. The last shutout by UB was a 4-0 win over Niagara in 1986. In addition, Januchowski almost threw a no-hitter in that game. The lone
hit for Binghamton was a lead-off single in the seventh and final inning of
the second game of a doubleheader. Januchowski recorded his first complete
game and struck out seven batters in the win. |
