The University at Buffalo baseball team held its home opener this past Thursday, starting with two games against Le Moyne. The Bulls were defeated in both games against the Dolphins following an epic 14-inning first game (6-5), then were toppled after Le Moyne posted eight runs in the fourth inning of the second game (9-6). Sophomore pitcher-turned-designated hitter Chris Ciesla (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) drove in two runs for the Bulls, while redshirt freshman James Flatley (Elma, NY/Iroquois) pitcjed six extra innings of relief to keep the Bulls in contention in the first game. The Dolphins picked up five eight runs in the fourth inning of game two to put them ahead for good, despite Buffalo’s late game heroics, putting four runs on the scoreboard to climb back into contention.
Junior Mike Folli (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) batted a stellar .615 in the three-game weekend series against Eastern Michigan, but the Bulls were only able to come away with one win. Following Friday’s 5-3 loss, the Bulls entered Saturday’s doubleheader with intentions to end their 18-game losing streak. The win would come in the bottom of the 12th inning after being tied a 1-1, when sophomore Eric Flynn (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Falls) scored from third base on a wild pitch that got away from the Eagle catcher. The Eagles would turn on the heat in the second game, taking the lead for good in the third inning with five runs. The Bulls were unable to climb back, falling 8-1. UB’s Workhorses Having played 21 games already this season, only two players on the Bulls roster have started and played in every game. Junior Mike Folli and sophomore Brad Agustin (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville East) have provided the team with steady play, combining for 53 of the team’s 166 hits at the plate this season, and 121 of the team’s 239 assists in the infield. Four Former UB Players To Throw First Pitch The University at Buffalo baseball team will honor a former member of its team during every Saturday home game. Four players who used to don the blue and white will throw out ceremonial first pitches before each game. On 3/31, current pitching coach Joe Hesketh set the tone. Following him will be Bill Balfoort (1970-71) on 4/14, Mike Dixon (1974-77) on 4/28, and Brian Hanson (1966-68) on 5/5. On Deck
The Bulls prepare for a showdown against cross-town rival Canisius on Wed., April 4 at 3 p.m., then head to Toledo for a three-game weekend series. |
