Baseball Weekly ReleaseBulls Salvage Finale at Kent State After falling to Kent State in the first three games of their Mid-American Conference series, the Bulls rallied Sunday to take the finale 13-5 scoring six runs in the ninth inning to break open a tight contest. The Bulls led 7-0 before the Golden Flashes closed the gap to 7-5 in the eighth inning. UB's bats then went to work in the ninth. Bryan Sanchez (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua Academy) homered, his third of the season to give the Bulls an 8-5 lead. After doubling down the left field line, Joe Todoro (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) scored on a wild pitch and Corey Blair (Oneida, NY/Oneida) crossed the plate on a passed ball to give UB a 10-5 lead. Adrian Daniels (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport), Tim Sova (Rochester, NY/Greece-Athena) and Brandon DiCesare (Rochester, NY/McQuaid Jesuit) each followed with run scoring hits to give the Bulls the victory. Starting pitcher John Sullivan (Buffalo, NY/Timon/St. Jude) allowed just one run to pick up his second win of the season. The weekend didn't start as well for the Bulls. In Friday's opener, the Bulls squandered a 7-5 lead as Kent State's Dan Gutschmidt hit a three-run game-ending homer for the 8-7 decision. In Saturday's doubleheader, the Bulls dropped both ends by identical 6-0 scores, notching just four hits in each contest. DiCesare went 3-of-7 in the two games while Scott Gruver (Vestal, NY/Vestal) had a pair of singles in game one.
One Hit Streak Continues, One Ends Two Bulls have managed long consecutive game hit streaks as the season heads to the midpoint. Sophomore catcher/outfielder Brandon DiCesare has put together a 13-game hitting streak dating back to March 8. The timespan consists of 16 Bulls' games as DiCesare did not appear in three contests during their Florida trip. Since beginning his streak, DiCesare has hit .388 (19-of-49) with six multiple hit games. DiCesare went 8-of-18 (.444) during the series at Kent State to raise his average to .333. Meanwhile, Eric Huber (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) saw an 11-game hit streak snapped in Saturday's doubleheader at Kent State. Huber was 2-of-4 with a pair of RBIs in Friday's opener. The outfielder hit an even .500 (23-of-46) during his streak. After missing the 2000 season with a torn ACL, Huber leads the Bulls in hitting with a .393 batting average and 33 hits. He is second on the club with 17 RBIs.
Schedule Change For Bulls This week's schedule originally saw the Bulls hosting Canisius at Dunn Tire Park on Tuesday, April 3. Due to the cold, damp weather that Buffalo has been seeing recently, that game has been moved to Canisius' Demske Complex. The game will serve as a makeup of the March 28 matchup at Canisius that was postponed due to the weather. Although the game will be held at Canisius' home diamond, the Bulls will serve as the home team.
Sanchez Closing in HR Record Sophomore Bryan Sanchez hit his third home run of the season in Sunday's 13-5 win at Kent State. With the roundtripper, Sanchez moved into third place on the Bulls' all-time home run list with 14 passing Jim Wojcik and Mike Dixon who each had hit 13 in their careers. Next on the list is Doug Olsson's 1979-82 mark of 15 and Marty Cerny's 1983-85 record of 17. Sanchez set the single-season home run mark as a freshman in 2000 with 11.
