The University at Buffalo baseball team swept a shortened, two-game Mid-American Conference series from Central Michigan on Sunday in Olean, NY. The Bulls took game one from the Chippewas, 1-0, and completed the doubleheader sweep with a 4-3 victory in ten innings in game two. For the second-straight weekend, Buffalo hosted a MAC series at St. Bonaventure due to unplayable field conditions at UB’s Amherst Audubon Field. Earlier in the week, Buffalo dropped a non-conference contest at Le Moyne, 10-9, on Tuesday afternoon. Pitching Staff Nearly Untouchable Against CMU Four members of the UB pitching staff combined on an outstanding performance against Central Michigan, allowing just one earned run in 19 innings. Jeffrey Hains (Mexico, NY/Mexico) started game one, pitching 8.2 shutout innings to record the victory before turning the game over to Steve Geltz (Ransomville, NY/Wilson) who got the final out and the save. In game two, Mike Stangroom (Fallston, MD/Calvert Hall) started and threw six strong innings and Zach Anderson (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville East) came on to pitch the final four innings and record the victory.
Making just his fifth and sixth starts of the season, freshman third baseman Kevin McCall (Chagrin Falls, OH/Notre Dame Cathedral) made major contributions to the Buffalo offense in both ends of the doubleheader sweep of Central Michigan. In game one, McCall recorded two of UB’s five hits. After a lead off single in the sixth, McCall scored the only run of the game when he was driven in on a double by Rob Mancini (Windsor, Ontario/St. Thomas). In game two, McCall again registered two hits and scored a run as the Bulls completed the sweep of Central Michigan. Bulls Continue Swinging For The Fences Buffalo added to their home run total in Wednesday’s game at Le Moyne as Mancini, Chris Ciesla (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) and Nick Walczak (Tonawanda, NY/Kenmore East) each homered against the Dolphins. Mancini and Walczak are tied for the team lead with three round-trippers each. As a team, the Bulls have hit 16 home runs this season after hitting just five during the entire 2007 campaign.
The Bulls will travel back to Olean, NY on Wednesday, April 2 for a non-conference doubleheader against the Bonnies of St. Bonaventure. Buffalo will hit the road for the first time in MAC play this weekend as they travel to Muncie, IN for a three-game set against Ball State. First pitch between the Bulls and the Cardinals is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. on Friday and 1:00 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday. |
