BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo baseball team was handed two defeats Thursday afternoon, as the team was unable to maintain leads heading into the later innings of both affairs. The Dolphins won the first game, 6-5, after 14 innings of extra play and then rallied with an eight-run fourth inning in the second game to take the twinbill, 9-6.

Le Moyne (6-14) got on the scoreboard in the first inning in both games, setting the tone early. With a 4-0 lead heading into the bottom of the third inning of the first game, sophomore Chris Ciesla (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) belted a long single up the middle and into the outfield to score two runs and cut the deficit to one, 4-3. Two more runs scored in the sixth would allow the Bulls (1-17) to take the lead, as juniors Rick Oliveri (Tonawanda, NY/Canisius) and Mike Folli (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) picked up RBI singles a piece. Entering the seventh with the 5-4 lead, the Dolphins managed to force extra innings with a run-scoring single by Andy Parrino. The game quickly turned into a pitcher's duel, as UB redshirt freshman James Flatley (Elma, NY/Iroquois) and Le Moyne's Luke Nellis both pitched six innings of relief heading into the 14th inning. The game would be decided on a throwing error, allowing Le Moyne's Stephen Carwford to score from third.

In the second game, the Bulls would once again hold a slim lead heading into the middle frames. Junior Tony Fuller (Rochester, NY/Penfield) smacked a two-run double in the third inning to claim a 2-1 lead. However, the Dolphins would answer with eight runs in the fourth to jump out to a commanding lead. Le Moyne's Robby Perez poked a three-run bases-clearing single into left center to start the rally and would later score off a single by Crawford. In the seventh and last inning of the ballgame, Buffalo put four runs on the scoreboard to climb back into contention, but was unable to come away with the late-game heroics.

The Bulls return to Amherst Audobon Field Friday afternoon, where they will begin their Mid-American Conference schedule with a three-game weekend series against Eastern Michigan. The game is scheduled for 3 p.m., while Saturday and Sunday's games are set for 1 p.m.
