Buffalo Drops Series Opener to Akron, 8-0
AKRON, OH The Buffalo baseball team (3-13, 0-3) opened a four-game series with an 8-0 loss to Akron (6-10, 1-0) on Friday afternoon at Lee Jackson Field. The Zips had a big first inning as they batted around and scored four runs to take control of the contest. The key hit was a bases loaded double by Tom Lindhe that plated two Zips. Akron added two runs in the fourth inning and single runs in the sixth and eighth innings for the 8-0 final score. The Bulls pounded out eight hits by eight different players. Brian Zelasko (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) hit his first double of the season for UB's lone extra-base hit. On the mound, Mark McMahon (West Seneca, NY/Timon/St. Jude) allowed six earned runs on eight hits and was charged with the loss. Kyle Swiatocha (Forest Hills, NY/Holy Cross) and Matt Franklin (Rochester, NY/Greece-Athena) each allowed one run on two hits in two innings of relief. Akron starter Frank Mendoza pitched seven innings of shutout ball, allowing four hits, to pick up his third win of the season. The series will continue with a doubleheader on Saturday (1 pm) and a single game on Sunday (1 pm). |
