Balentine Takes Pitching Award

Fourth consecutive UB hurler to take MAC East Division Pitcher of the Week award

BUFFALO, NY For the fourth consecutive week, a University at Buffalo baseball player has been selected as the Mid-American Conference's East Division Pitcher of the Week. Tyler Balentine (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) won this week's honor as announced by the league on Tuesday.

A junior righthander, Balentine earned his first victory of the season with a 4-1 extra-inning decision at George Mason on Saturday, March 23. After coming out of the bullpen in his first two appearances this season, Balentine got his first starting assignment, pitching seven innings and allowing an unearned run in his final inning of work. Balentine struck out six while scattering six hits and one walk. He picked up the victory after the Bulls rallied for three runs in the eighth inning.

With the stellar effort, Balentine lowered his earned run average to a team-best 1.93 and currently ranks fifth in the MAC while allowing just a .204 opponent's batting average, which is sixth-best in the conference. Balentine's 15 strikeouts this season are second among the UB pitching staff.

Balentine joins previous recipients Brendan Dunford (Buffalo, NY/Timon/St. Jude), Mark Garrard (Port Hope, Ontario/Port Hope) and John Sullivan (Buffalo, NY/Timon/St. Jude) as the four different Bulls' hurler to win the weekly award.
