Bulls Open MAC Play Against Northern Illinois

The University at Buffalo baseball team began Mid-American Conference play with a three-game set against Northern Illinois. The Huskies swept the series from the Bulls, winning a pair of games on Saturday, March 22, 10-3 and 17-1, and taking the final game of the set on Sunday, March 23, 6-4. Due to unplayable field conditions at Buffalo’s home field, Amherst Audubon Field, the series was moved to McGraw-Jennings Field at St. Bonaventure University in Olean, NY.

Stangroom Solid in First Start

Pitcher Mike Stangroom (Fallston, MD/Calvert Hall) made his first start as a member of the Bulls in Sunday’s contest against Northern Illinois. Stangroom threw six innings, allowing just one run and scattering five hits. The junior right hander struck out five Northern Illinois batters and allowed just one walk, he did not get a decision in the contest. On the season, Stangroom has made six appearances, with a 3.24 earned run average and has struck out 16 batters in 16.2 innings of work.

Bulls Continue Swinging For The Fences

Rob Mancini (Windsor, Ontario/St. Thomas) and Adam Skonieczki (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) each homered in Sunday’s contest against Northern Illinois, bringing Buffalo’s season home run total to 13. Last year, the Bulls hit just five home runs during the entire 51-game season. For Mancini, the home run was his second of the season and for Skonieczki it was his first of the year and the first of his UB career.

Ciesla Hits Safely In Five Straight

With hits in all three games against Northern Illinois, junior Chris Ciesla (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) now has a five-game hitting streak. The last time Ciesla did not have a hit for the Bulls was on March 14 against Notre Dame. Prior to the Notre Dame game, Ciesla hit safely in 12 consecutive games. In total, Ciesla has gotten at least one hit in 17 of 19 games played this season. He has a team-best .342 batting average and is also tied for the team lead in doubles with five.

On Deck
