UB Baseball Suffers Sweep

Bulls defeated by George Mason, 4-1 and 10-0, in Sunday doubleheader

FAIRFAX, VA - The University at Buffalo (5-7) baseball team dropped a Sunday doubleheader to George Mason University (9-15) to complete a four-game weekend series. UB was defeated 4-1 in the opener and 10-0 in the nightcap as the Bulls collected just eight hits in the two games.

The Bulls drew first blood in the opener with an unearned run in the second inning. Bryan Sanchez (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua Academy) singled to open the inning and moved to second on an infield error that put John Boom (London, Ontario/Catholic Central) on base. Andrew Wengert (Utica, NY/Proctor) walked to load the bases. The run scored when Corey Blair (Oneida, NY/Oneida) hit into a fielder's choice. Unfortunately, that was all the offense the Bulls could muster in the inning as UB left the bases loaded.

George Mason then scored two runs off starter John Sullivan (Buffalo, NY/Timon/St. Jude) to take the lead in the third inning. The Patriots got RBIs from Matt Cooksey and Jeff Palumbo to take the 2-1 edge. GMU added a pair in the sixth on an RBI double by Evan Howard and single by Kevin McNeil.

Sullivan (2-1) took the loss, going the distance, allowing six hits while striking out two. Blair led the Bulls with two hits, offensively. Jake Glanzmann (2-1) struck out six and allowed four hits in the complete game victory for the Patriots.

The Bulls' bats fell silent in game two as they picked up four hits against GMU starter Chris Murray (2-4). Brandon DiCesare (Rochester, NY/McQuaid Jesuit), Sanchez and Joe Mihalics (Tonawanda, NY/Timon/St. Jude) were each 1-for-2 at the plate. Joe Todoro (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) also collected a pinch-hit single to lead off the sixth inning.

Brendan Dunford (Buffalo, NY/Timon/St. Jude) suffered the loss on the mound for the Bulls to drop his record to 1-3. Dunford gave up six runs on six hits in three innings of work. He was followed on the mound by Mike Leslie (Suffern, NY/Suffern), who allowed three runs in two innings of work and Anthony Puccia (Penfield, NY/Penfield) who tossed one inning and gave up a run. The Bulls' mound staff also suffered through a wild spell in the game hitting four batters and walking five.

The Bulls now return to Buffalo for a non-conference matchup at Canisius on Wednesday. UB opens its Mid-American Conference schedule with a four-game series against Marshall at the Amherst Pepsi Center Field beginning Friday.
