The University at Buffalo baseball team picked up four victories in their nine-game, spring break Texas road trip. The Bulls opened the trip with a 12-7 victory over New York Tech in the Lamar Classic on March 7. Buffalo then won a pair of games on March 12, defeating Southern Illinois, 3-2, and Trinity University, 17-11. The Bulls finished the trip on a positive not, downing Texas-Pan American, 2-1, on March 15. Buffalo is now 5-11 on the season. Bulls Get a Dozen in One Inning In their 17-11 victory over Trinity University, the Bulls did the majority of their damage in the fourth inning, scoring 12 runs in the frame. Even more remarkable, the 12 runs came on just four hits. UB was aided by two errors, five walks, one hit by pitch and one catcher’s interference call. Bobby Pizzuto (Mentor, OH/Notre Dame Cathedral) capped the inning for the Bulls with a grand slam to score the final four runs of the inning.
Zach Anderson (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville East) and Jeffrey Hains (Mexico, NY/Mexico) combined a pair of wins during Buffalo’s Texas trip. Anderson started for the Bulls in their win over Southern Illinois, going five innings and allowing just two runs before giving way to Hains who pitched two innings, allowing no runs and just one hit. Against Texas-Pan American three days later, it was Hains that got the start, going seven innings, allowing just one run on five hits. Anderson came on to relief Hains against the Broncs, throwing one scoreless inning. Geltz Picks Up Second Save of the Season Steve Geltz (Ransomville, NY/Wilson) picked up a pair of saves for the Bulls in Texas, closing out victories over Southern Illinois and Texas-Pan American. Geltz picked up a two inning save against the Salukis, striking out three while allowing just one hit. In the victory over the Broncs, Geltz pitched one inning, allowing no hits and striking out two.
Junior Brian Randazzo (St. Charles, MO/St. Charles) had a good week for the Bulls during their stay in Texas. Randazzo was 7-for-19 at the plate (.368) with a .632 slugging percentage, one home run, two doubles and four runs batted in. Randazzo was the Bulls leadoff hitter in the final six games of the trip to Texas. On Deck The Bulls will return to Buffalo for the first home games of the season this weekend as they host Northern Illinois in the first weekend of Mid-American Conference play. The Bulls and Huskies are scheduled to play a three-game set at Amherst Audubon Field with first pitch slated for 3:00 p.m. on Friday and 1:00 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. |
