Buffalo Rallies for 11-9 Win Over Towson
TOWSON, MD Senior second baseman Adrian Daniels (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport) hit a two-run home run with one out in the top of the tenth inning as Buffalo (3-10) rallied from an 8-4 eighth inning deficit and beat Towson (5-4) in the final game of their three-game weekend series at Schuerholz Park on Sunday afternoon. The Bulls dug themselves into an early hole as the Tigers jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning. Towson's Jeremy Stifler hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the third inning to extend the Tiger lead to 6-0. The Bulls managed to cut the lead in half by scoring three runs in the fourth inning. Brandon DiCesare (Rochester, NY/McQuaid Jesuit) scored on a balk, Bryan Sanchez (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua Academy) scored on a David Amaro (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) sacrifice fly and John Boom (London, Ontario/Catholic Central) crossed the plate following a single by Andrew Wengert (Utica, NY/Proctor). Towson outfielder Adam Heffron hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth inning to extend the lead to 8-3. Boom hit his first home run of the season in the top of the sixth to cut the lead to 8-4. The Bulls exploded for five runs, all with two outs, in the top of the eighth inning to take a 9-8 lead. Three straight singles by Joe Mihalics (Tonawanda, NY/Timon/St. Jude), Phil Vanhorne (Scarborough, Ontario/Mother Teresa) and Daniels ignited the UB rally. A grand slam off the bat of Sachez gave the Bulls the lead. However, the lead was short-lived as Mark Chiccini led off the bottom of the eighth with a solo home run for Towson to tie the game at 9-9. In the tenth, Mihalics led off the inning for the Bulls and was hit by a pitch. One out later, Daniels launched a two-run homer to put Buffalo ahead, 11-9. Sophomore righthander Chris McGraw (Summerville, SC/Stratford), who retired the Tigers in the tenth, earned his first win of the season by pitching five innings of solid relief. He allowed just one run and four hits during his stint. Sanchez led UB's 13-hit attack with three hits and four RBIs while Daniels had two hits and three RBIs. |
