Buffalo Swept by Towson in Doubleheader
TOWSON, MD The Buffalo baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader to Towson on Saturday afternoon at Schuerholz Field. In game one, the Bulls were held to one-hit in a 2-0 loss. UB fell to Towson, 5-3, in the nightcap. The opening game was a classic pitchers' dual as both starters had strong outings. Buffalo starter Tyler Balentine (Mendon, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) went the distance, allowing two earned runs and scattering seven hits over six innings. However, Towson starter Stephen Merson, making his first collegiate start, was nearly unhitable, allowing only one hit and striking out four. Brandon DiCesare (Rochester, NY/McQuaid Jesuit) got the Bulls' lone hit with an infield single in the fourth inning. In game two, Towson scored a run in each of the first three innings to post a 3-0 lead. DiCesare launched a solo home run in the fourth inning to cut the lead to 3-1. After the Tigers scored again in the bottom of the fourth, Buffalo's Kevin Nesteruk (Cheektowaga, NY/West Seneca East) scored on an RBI single by Joe Mihalics (Tonawanda, NY/Timon/St. Jude) in the fifth to cut the Towson lead to 4-2. Towson added an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth to make the score 5-2. Bryan Sanchez (Canandaigua, NY/Canandiagua Academy) ripped his first home run of the season in the seventh inning to cut the lead to 5-3, but the Bulls would get no closer as the Tigers held on for the victory. The losses drop the Bulls to 2-10 on the season. Towson improves to 5-3. The two teams will
conclude the series on Sunday at noon. |
