Baseball Wins One, Drops Two in Florida

Bulls Beat Sacred Heart, Lose to Pittsburgh, Rhode Island

Homestead, FL - The University at Buffalo picked up another win in their spring trip to Florida, but dropped a couple more games as well. On Thursday, UB lost to Pittsburgh 10-7. Friday, the Bulls took a win over Sacred Heart, 6-2, before falling to Rhode Island 5-1.

Against Pittsburgh, the Bulls trailed but came back late, scoring three runs in the eighth inning to make it 10-5, then added two more runs in the ninth inning and had bases loaded with one out before falling 10-7. The Bulls lost despite outhitting the Panthers 15-8. UB stranded 13 runners on base. Anthony Puccia (Penfield, NY/Penfield) took the loss for UB. Brandon DiCesare (Rochester, NY/McQuaid Jesuit) had a big day, going 4-for-4 and Brian Zelasko (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) went 3-for-5 with three RBIs.

The Bulls picked up a win over Sacred Heart on Friday, winning that game 6-2. Pete Selden (Holley, NY/Holley) picked up the victory on the mound, going 6.1 innings and giving up just four hits. Selden carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning as well. Brandon DiCesare had another big game, going 2-for-3, and gave him six consecutive hits with his performance the previous night against Pittsburgh. The Bulls jumped out quick against Sacred Heart, scoring three runs in the first inning and two runs in the second. In the first, Rick Mariano (Williamsville, NY/St. Joe's) knocked in two with a two-run double and DiCesare scored another with an RBI single. Charlie Smilinich (Fort Drum, NY/Fort Drum) continued his hot hitting, collecting two hits and scoring twice, Scott Mruczek (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) had two hits and Mariano had two hits and three RBIs on the day.

In the Friday afternoon game, the Bulls again had a problem with leaving runners on base and fell to Rhode Island 5-1. Jeff Robertson (Kenmore, NY/Kenmore West) took the loss for UB, despite giving up just four hits in 5.2 innings. The game was tied at 1-1 going into the sixth inning before the Rams scored two unearned runs in the sixth and two more runs in the eighth inning. The Bulls charged back and had bases loaded in the ninth, and Mark Vogel (West Seneca, NY/Bishop Timon) hit a deep fly ball that was caught at the warning track for the last out of the game. On the day, Vogel collected two hits and Rick Mariano had three hits and walk, reaching base all four times.

The Bulls are now 3-6 in their first season back since 1986, and will finish up their spring break trip to Florida with two games on Saturday. UB will play Hartford and Wagner to wrap up their games there before heading back to Buffalo.
