Bulls Baseball Picks Up Season's First WinsHOMESTEAD, FL - The University at Buffalo baseball team got into the win column with a pair of victories Thursday afternoon at the Homestead Challenge to improve to 2-6 on their season-opening trip. In Thursday's opener, the Bulls dumped Mt. St. Mary's 14-5 to claim their first win of the year. The 14 runs were the most scored by the Bulls since their 15-0 win over Albany on April 30, 2000. UB took the lead for good early in the contest as senior second baseman Kevin Brown (Amherst, NY/Amherst) knocked in a pair of runs in the second inning. Joe Todoro (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) also had a pair of RBIs in the win. Eric Huber (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) went 3-for-5 at the plate adding three RBIs while first baseman Bryan Sanchez (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua) also tallied three RBIs. That was all the support starting pitcher Anthony Puccia (Penfield, NY/Penfield) would need. Puccia was solid on the mound allowing just three hits and two earned runs in 6 1/3 innings of work to even his record at 1-1. In Thursday's second contest, the Bulls defeated local rival St. Bonaventure 5-1. Bulls starter John Sullivan (Buffalo, NY/Timon/St. Jude) evened his record at 1-1 by spinning a complete game two-hitter. Adrian Daniels (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport) scored a pair of runs in the contest while Tim Sova (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena), Sanchez and Brandon DiCesare (Rochester, NY/McQuaid Jesuit) all crossed the plate once for the Bulls. Brown led the offensive attack with a fourth inning hit knocking in a pair. Earlier in the week, the Bulls were swept by Boston College 8-5 and 8-2 in a day-night doubleheader. In the first game, UB scored all five of its runs in the fifth inning on seven hits. Brown knocked in Todoro and Rob Golemba (New City, NY/Clarkstown South) on a single to center. Sova later brought Brown home with a single. Huber and Corey Blair (Oneida, NY/Oneida) also added RBIs in the inning closing the gap to 6-5 before the Eagles added a pair in the sixth for the 8-5 final. Sova and Huber finished with two hits apiece while starter Nick Bellacose (Clarence, NY/Clarence) took the loss on the mound. The Bulls took an early 2-0 lead in the nightcap with a first inning RBI double by Sanchez and and Sova reaching on a throwing error in the third and scoring on a wild pitch. Sanchez led the team with two of the Bulls' four hits on the evening. However the Eagles scored all eight of their runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to take the 8-2 win. UB is now 2-6 heading into the final weekend in Florida. The Bulls started their roadtrip with losses
to 38th-ranked Florida International (10-6), Duquesne (2-1), Villanova (3-1) and Holy Cross (22-11). UB faces
Yale on Friday and Sacred Heart on Saturday in its final contests at the Homestead Challenge. The Bulls open
their home schedule March 21 with a doubleheader against Niagara at Dunn Tire Park. Game one's opening pitch
is slated for 2:00 pm. |
