BEAUMONT, TX - The University at Buffalo baseball team dropped a pair of games in the Lamar Classic on Saturday. In their first game, the Bulls fell to the host Cardinals, 7-6. UB then dropped the nightcap to New York Tech, 8-0. The losses dropped the Bulls to 2-8 on the season.

The Bulls struck first against Lamar in the top of the third Bobby Pizzuto (Mentor, OH/Notre Dame Cathedral) tripled to score Brian Randazzo (St. Charles, MO/St. Charles), giving UB a 1-0 lead. Two batters later, Chris Ciesla (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) doubled to score Pizzuto and give the Bulls a 2-0 lead.

Buffalo increased their lead to 4-0 in the top of the sixth when, after Nick Walczak (Tonawanda, NY/Kenmore East) reached on a single and Shivam Bhan (Caledon, Ontario/Mayfield) walked, Randazzo hit a two RBI triple.

Chaz Mye (North Tonawanda, NY/St. Joseph’s) allowed no runs and just one hit through the first five innings for the Bulls, but Lamar used four hits and two Buffalo errors to score four runs to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth. All four runs in the inning were unearned.

The Bulls regained the lead in the eighth when Eric Flynn (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Falls) singled and Rob Mancini (Windsor, Ontario/St. Thomas) followed with a two run homer to left, giving UB a 6-4 lead. But the Buffalo lead would not last long as Lamar answered with three runs in the bottom of the eighth and the Cardinals held on for a 7-6 victory.

In the second game of the day, the Bulls fell behind early when Effrey Valdez doubled for New York Tech in the first inning, scoring Brian Smith, giving the Bears a 1-0 lead. A pair of walks and a pair of errors led to two more runs for the New York Tech in the second.

New York Tech scored another run in the third and three more in the fourth as they went on to shutout the Bulls.

Eric Johnson and Louie Bernardi combined to give up just three hits to the Bulls.

Buffalo will be back on the diamond in Beaumont, TX on Sunday to conclude play in the Lamar Classic. The Bulls will play MAC rival Akron, game time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. eastern time.
