UB Baseball Wins Season OpenerHOMESTEAD, FL - The University at Buffalo baseball team won their season opener 12-10 over Chicago State Friday night in Homestead, FL. The baseball program was reinstated this season and is competing at the Division I level for the first time since the 1986 season. The Bulls won the slugfest that was highlighted by the hitting of UB's Kevin Brown (Amherst, NY). Brown collected two hits on the night, including a three-run homer, his first of the season. Mike Flaherty (Spencerport, NY) collected two hits and knocked in three RBIs and Charlie Smilinich (Fort Drum, NY) had two hits, including one off the centerfield wall. Freshman Adrian Daniels (Spencerport, NY) had a two-run double as well. Senior Tom Januchowski (Depew, NY) picked up the win for the Bulls, his first of the season. The Bulls won despite getting outhit 18-10, but the Bulls committed just one error to the Cougars four. It was the first game for UB baseball since the program was cut following the 1986 season. The last game was an 8-4 win over Niagara back on May 4, 1986. The Bulls now have a two-game winning streak that spans 14 years and 5,050 days between victories. UB (1-0) will face Boston College in a doubleheader on Saturday at 2 pm. |
