Athletes of the Week - 12/04/2000
Shawn Kegel (Wantagh, NY/MacArthur) of the
wrestling team finished third in the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational with a
6-1 record in the 133-pound bracket. After falling in the quarterfinals, Kegel
bounced back with four straight wins to claim third place defeating some of
the tournament's top-ranked grapplers along the way, including Pittsburgh's
Rob Loper, the tournament's top seed and this season's number two ranked wrestler
in the nation in preseason polls and Arizona State's David Douglas, the third
seed in the bracket.
Christina Keck (Erie, PA/McDowell) of the women's track and field
team set a school record in the 1000 meters finishing second by just a fraction
of a second at the Katie Almeter Memorial Colgate Invitational. Keck's time of
2:55.94 broke the old record of 3:00.17 set by Judith Novak in 1995 and qualified
her for the ECAC Championships. The Bulls won the meet scoring 163 points to
easily outdistance host Colgate and local rival Canisius.
