Athletes of the Week - 08/29/2006
Dan Gwyther (London, England/Woodcote) of the men's soccer team earned tournament MVP and All-Tournament honors at the WVU Shootout leading the Bulls to a 2-1 victory over Pittsburgh and a scoreless tie against the host Mountaineers. Gwyther, a sophomore defender, scored the game-winner against Pittsburgh to give UB its first road season-opening victory since 2000. He also anchored a staunch UB defense that held West Virginia, a 2006 NCAA Tournament participant, without a goal in 120 minutes of action in the finale.
Heidi Griffiths (Clarence, NY/Clarence) of the women's soccer team scored two goals to lead the Bulls past regional rival St. Bonaventure in UB's home opener on Sunday. Griffith netted both of UB's tallies in the first half as the Bulls downed the Bonnies 2-0. The two goals were the junior forward/midfielder's first since the 2004 campaign and the four points eclipsed her previous career total of three.
