Athletes of the Week - 05/15/2006
Brian Heim (East Amherst, NY/Williamsville East) of the men's track and field team won his second 400-meter hurdles title, breaking his own school record, at the MAC Championships. Heim, the fastest qualifier on Friday, turned in a time of 51.75, bettering his own mark by two-tenths of a second. He also earned first-team All-MAC honors for the victory and was on UB's record-setting 4x100-meter relay team that placed second.
The Second Varsity 8 of the women's rowing team won the championship final at the prestigious Dad Vail Regatta in Philadelphia. The Bulls took the championship race in 6:43.58 after also placing first in the quarterfinal and semifinal heats. The squad members included coxswain Jessica Hughes (Syracuse, NY/Liverpool), Margaret Devendorf (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) and rowers Morgan Witte (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker), Kristen Lane (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech), Nicole Cyr (Groton, NY/Dryden), Maggie Fairgrieve (Fort Erie, Ont./Lakeshore Catholic), Amanda Mackeigan (Brockville, Ont./Brockville C.I.), Jackie Stone (Syracuse, NY/Nottingham), and Amy Eggleston (Ripley, NY/Ripley). For the season, the boat finished 50-8. UB's top boat, the Varsity 8, finished the year with a 73-8 record.
