Athletes of the Week - 03/10/2003
 Gary Cooper (Adams, NY/South
Jefferson) of the wrestling team won the 174-pound title at the
Mid-American Conference Championships and earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships in Kansas
City, starting March 20. Cooper, who now has 112 career wins, defeated Ohio's Ed Willis by a 5-2 score in the
final match to claim the title. The Bulls finished fifth in the team standings at the meet.
Rachel Martin (Kenmore, NY/Kenmore
West) of the women's basketball team set career-highs of
22 points and 17 rebounds as she led the Bulls to a 72-53 win in the first round of the Mid-American
Conference women's basketball tournament. With the win, the Bulls advanced to Cleveland's Gund Arena for the first
time since 2000 to play in the second round. Martin got the start for the Bulls as UB's leading rebounder and
second-leading scorer Jessica Kochendorfer (Allen,
MI/Quincy) sat out the game with a concussion suffered earlier
in the week.
