Athletes of the Week - 03/05/2001

Dave Guarino (Derby, NY/Lake Shore) of the men's wrestling team earned a Mid-American Conference individual championship in the 165-pound weight class and will represent UB at the NCAA Division I Championships. Guarino won the finals of his weight class with a 5-4 win over Nick Nemeth of Kent State, last season's MAC champion and Freshman of the Year. Guarino finished the tournament with a 2-0 record after defeating Eastern Michigan's Tim Hoff in the semifinals. UB took fourth place in the six-team meet.

Jason McLachlan (Arvada, CO) of the men's swim team set three school records at the Mid-American Conference Championships. He finished second in the 500 freestyle (4:31.47), 400 individual medley (3:57.87) and 200 backstroke (1:48.70). The Bulls placed seventh in the eight team field.

Sonia Ortega (Chihuahua, Mexico/Cobach) of the women's basketball team scored a triple-double with 10 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists in the Bulls' 65-64 Mid-American Conference Tournament first round loss to Akron. Ortega also earned Mid-American Conference Defensive Player of the Year honors and finishes her career with 251 steals, second all-time in Bulls history.
