ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

Athletes of the Week - 01/20/2003

Photo of Gary Cooper

Gary Cooper (Adams, NY/South Jefferson) of the wrestling team became UB's all-time winningest individual and won the 174-pound title at the New York State Championships to lead the Bulls to their first team title since 1978. Cooper surpassed Josh States' 1997-2001 win total of 102 with a 9-0 victory over Nassau County's Carlos Patrick. He followed with a 3-2 victory over Army's Luke Calvert in the championship match. The senior is now 25-4 this season and 104-41 in his career with the Bulls.

Photo of Kim Kilpela Kim Kilpela (West Bloomfield, MI/West Bloomfield) of the women's basketball team scored 17 points and added 10 rebounds, her first double-double of the season, to give the Bulls a 71-65 road victory at Eastern Michigan. Kilpela, who grew up not far from the Eastern Michigan campus, came off the bench to spark a UB rally, scoring nine points in an early first half run to give UB a lead. She later broke a 57-57 tie with 4:27 left, scoring on a jumper which gave the Bulls a lead they would not relinquish.
