ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

Athletes of the Week - 01/07/2002

Photo of Garrett Bontempo Garrett Bontempo (DuBois, PA/DuBois Area) of the wrestling team scored a major upset in his only bout at the Buckeye Duals, defeating Ohio State's Anton Talamantes, ranked 15th nationally, by a 5-2 count. The 184-pounder is now 11-4 overall and 3-1 in dual meet competition. It was the second time that a UB wrestler had defeated the nationally-ranked Talamantes after Josh States scored an identical 5-2 decision in last season's Buckeye Duals.

Photo of Kate McMeeken-Ruscoe Kate McMeeken-Ruscoe (Nelson, New Zealand/University of Hawaii) of the women's basketball team tied her season high with 20 points, including a perfect 6-of-6 from the free throw line, in just 22 minutes in leading the Bulls to a 73-47 win over Akron. In UB's two-game road trip at Miami and Akron, she averaged 14.5 points, 3.5 rebounds and 3.5 steals. This season, McMeeken-Ruscoe leads the Bulls with 32 steals and is second on the squad in both scoring (11.6 ppg) and assists (31).
