Student-Athlete Tutorial Program
Successful Students use Tutoring
Student Athlete Responsibility
We will try to provide you with a tutor for the course(s) in which you are requesting
assistance. There is no charge for this service. We do ask that you adhere to our
guidelines and remember that we are here to help you!
- Student-Athlete Tutoring Policy
Student-Athlete's who are receiving tutoring services and do not contact tutors in
advance regarding cancelled appointments will be held to the following policy:
First Occurrence: Tutorial Coordinator will send an email to the student-athlete,
team academic advisor, and the team liaison regarding missed appointment.
Second Occurrence: Tutorial Coordinator will send an email to the student-athlete,
team academic advisor, and the team liaison regarding missed appointment. Tutoring
privileges will be suspended until a meeting takes place between the student-athlete
and the team advisor.
Third Occurrence: Tutoring privileges are revoked. All necessary parties are
notified by the Tutorial Coordinator.
- Expectations of Student-Athletes receiving tutorial services:
- Regular ATTENDANCE of all classes
- Student-Athletes are expected to bring textbooks, notebooks, and other relevant
course material to each tutoring session.
- Student-Athletes CANNOT expect emergency help the night before an academic deadline
because of THEIR failure to prepare.
- Student-Athletes must carry out all recommendations made by the tutor, regarding
their course.
- Meet in a
public place on campus, the Office of Athlete Academic and Student
Services computer lab or conference room, the UB libraries, or any open classroom.
DO NOT meet in dorm rooms, apartments, etc.
- To know what to expect of your tutor, please refer to the
Tutor Responsibility and Role page.
- Guidelines for getting the most out of your tutoring experience:
- Tutoring is open to any active student-athlete currently on roster and enrolled
at UB.
- Student-Athletes are allowed up to 2 hours of tutoring per week per subject.
- Tutoring begins the third full week of classes and ends the last day of final
exams.
- Arrive on time for tutoring sessions.
- Notify tutor in advance if you will be late or are unable to attend the tutoring
session. Students who miss two unexcused tutoring sessions may have their tutoring
assignment terminated.
- Make a serious attempt to understand and complete the assignments in preparation
for the tutoring session.
- The role of the tutor is to assist student-athletes in reviewing course
material, not to teach the student new course material.
- To get the most out of your tutoring sessions, it may be helpful to inform the
tutor about the topics relevant to the lecture for the week. This enables the tutor
to be more adequately prepared to help you in learning the material.
The success of your tutoring experience is dependent upon the collaboration of both
the tutor and the student-athlete. Both parties are expected to carry out his or her
roles and responsibilities as set forth in the Tutoring Guidelines. If at any time you
feel as though your tutoring needs are not being met, either as a tutor or a student-athlete,
PLEASE contact the tutorial services coordinator.
