Claudia Neba Outside Hitter - Volleyball
1. You transferred to UB from Rutgers last year, what was that transition like?
It was different, because when you are a freshman and you go to a new school you don’t know what to expect, but when you come in having already gone to a different school, already knowing what college life is like, I don’t think it was that difficult of a transition. My teammates and my coaches made it really easy and the people are really friendly here, so it wasn’t hard at all.
2. You are one of five girls from Colorado on the volleyball team, at a school relatively far away from home. What is it like having so many players from your home state playing here?
It’s great, it’s kind of like having your own little home flavor here in New York. I went to high school with Lauren (Fensten), so we are really close. Its nice having all of them (the girls from Colorado) around.
3. You did an internship at Time Warner this summer. What was that experience like and how does that relate to your future goals?
With Time Warner I was in the public relations department, I do want to be a publicist when I grow up, either that or a sports broadcaster, I haven’t really decided yet. But the internship gave me insight into the field and helped me understand what people in those positions go through on a day-to-day basis.
4. At 5-8 you are the shortest hitter on the team. What type of challenge does that present when you are hitting or blocking against taller people?
I don’t feel like people always take me seriously or think that I’m going to be that big of a threat because I am smaller, but I don’t ever think of it as an obstacle that prevents me from competing with anyone, so its not a big deal to me.
5. What give you a better feeling, a big block or a big kill?
I would say a big block because it’s a feeling where the other person is trying there hardest to get a kill and you deny them that opportunity. That’s a great feeling, but they are both great feelings.
6. Being a junior on a team with 10 freshman and sophomores, what kind of leadership role do you have to take on this team?
We are really young but I feel like our freshmen and sophomores are all great volleyball players. They have all come in here and made a great impact on our team, so I don’t feel like I have to push them any harder or anything like that. They all came in with a great attitude and a great work ethic, so it’s been really easy.
7. If you could play any other sport at UB, what would it be?
I think I would probably play soccer even though I am completely horrible at it, but a lot of my best friends are on the soccer team so I guess that is what I would choose.
8. Do you have a pre-match routine and, if so, what is it?
We always eat four hours before a match, after that I usually go back to the locker room and get dressed; I always have to put blue pre-wrap in my hair. I always put on things that same way, but I don’t think that’s really a superstition for me its more of just a habit, but that would be it.
9. What do you like to do in your free time?
We don’t get a lot of free time but I just like to hang out with my friends and be with the people that I care about the most… And sleep!
10. What has been your favorite moment at UB?
I think my favorite moment so far was setting the consecutive wins record. Before last year I don’t think we had won more than nine matches in a row and we beat that, we had ten, so I guess that was probably my best moment so far.
