TEN QUESTIONS WITH...

Amy Coron
Goalkeeper-Women's Soccer

1. You started off your senior season with a new coach. How difficult was the transition going into your senior year after having had the same coach for the previous three years?

The transition wasn’t really that bad because we got to play with him (Coach Thomas) in the spring. The coaching styles are different but we found a good way to move into a new season and it's worked really well so far.

2. How did it feel to start off the season like no other UB Women’s soccer team has- with four consecutive shutouts?

It felt good. We set the standards to be the best we can be and its nice to actually see results. I credit a lot of it to the defense more than myself.

3. Do you say anything to the defense before or during the game to pump them up?

We have our pre-game talk on the field and throughout the game we talk about watching marks, making sure we’re watching key players and their different patterns, so I’m constantly talking to them.

4. What’s the hardest part about being a goalie?

It’s just a different mentality than a field player. You have to be kind of crazy to be able to throw yourself in front of the ball or to come out into a field of players and punch out a ball. It’s just the mentality of an athlete.

5. Do you have any pre-game rituals?

Yea, I have a lot. I listen to a really extensive play-list before I go out- it’s like an hour and a half long. I also pace the goal- the full length, then half back and mark the center. I also mark the six, the penalty spot and then the 18.

6. Can you tell a difference in your play when you’re on artificial turf at the stadium vs. traditional grass, and which do you prefer?

Yea you can definitely tell the difference. The pace on the grass is a lot slower and we have to make sure we’re striking the ball harder. I used to prefer grass but now I found out I like turf a lot more because it’s the home field advantage.

7. What are you most looking forward to as you start MAC play this weekend?

Just showing the MAC how we’ve improved. We came out with a great start to our season and I don’t think they’re expecting us to be as good as we are because we’ve had seasons where we just haven’t shown our potential.

8. What is your favorite thing about UB?

My favorite thing about UB is University Hots because I love Garbage Plates… I’m from Rochester!

9. In your student bio you list your favorite athlete as Hakim Warrick. Does that still hold true and why?

I will probably get in trouble for saying this but I love Syracuse basketball. So any Syracuse athlete…I kind of flip back and forth between Hakim Warrick and Carmelo Anthony.

10. What has been your favorite moment as a UB student-athlete?

Beating Ball State last year. They came in undefeated in the MAC and we ended up winning. They completely underestimated us and it felt great to see them look at the scoreboard at the end of the game…we ruined their undefeated season.
