Lizaiha Garcia Volleyball
1. You recently broke the 16-year old school digs record of 1,525 set by Ann Reed, what does that accomplishment mean to you?
I wasn't really paying attention to it, I don't usually keep track of my digs, I just go out and play. When I found out that I was getting close I felt like it was an honor. Its kinda nice to know that its (the record) going to be there and other people that come here will have something to reach for. I got to meet her (Ann Reed), she was here watching us play when I broke the record so that was really nice and thoughtful of her.
2. You were voted the team most valuable player last season, does that add any pressure to you this season?
Maybe a little bit, because I would like to keep that this year and maybe that would make me work a little bit harder. But I pretty much work hard all the time and just try to lead by example. But hopefully I can get it again, we'll see.
3. How do you see your role as a leader on a team with just two seniors and 10 freshman and sophomores?
The young girls are all very good volleyball players but they also have lots of questions so since Sarah Streib and I are the only seniors we are usually the one in the position to be able to answer their questions.
4. What are your goals for the rest of your senior season?
As a team, I would like to peak at the right time. Right now we are kind of in a slump but I know that we are going to get out of that and hopefully we'll be peaking at the end of the season going into the MAC Tournament and hopefully win the conference.
5. You are only 5-4 in a sport played primarily by taller people. How big of a challenge has it been proving to other people that you could play Division I volleyball?
It's kind of funny, during preseason when we are in the dining hall I always get mistaken for a soccer player or a softball player because I am so short. When people ask me if I play a sport and I tell them I'm on the volleyball team they are like "how do you do that, you're not tall at all?" But it doesn't always matter how tall you are, its more about how hard you work.
6. As a libero describe what your role is on the floor.
The libero is a defensive specialist, we do a lot of digging. We wear a different color jersey and we can sub in and out for whomever, so we're pretty much in the game all of the time.
7. Do you have a pre-match routine and, if so, what is it?
I don't really have any superstitions or anything; I've never been like that. So no, I don't.
8. If you could play any other sport at UB, what would it be?
Soccer, because I used to play soccer and then I had to choose between volleyball and soccer so I would choose soccer. And some of my really good girlfriends are on the soccer team.
9. What do you like to do in your free time?
I really don't have that much free time, but when I do I just like to relax. I like to go shopping, I'm a big shopper, but that's pretty much it, relax and go shopping.
10. What has been your favorite moment at UB?
Probably our pre-game in the locker room because it's always a lot of fun, so that's probably my favorite moment.
