Mary Russell Outfielder - Softball
1. When and how did you get started playing softball?
I started playing softball when I was really young, but I started playing travel softball when I was nine. I got on a travel team and I’ve been going ever since.
2. What has it been like coming back from shoulder surgery last season?
It’s really nice. I think that sitting out for a year, examining everything, just watching and not playing has given me a new perspective on the game and made me miss it. My shoulder still hurts, so I deal with that everyday, but it’s okay.
3. Your team is forced to travel a lot early in the season. Has there been a place or two that your team has traveled that has been your favorite?
My freshman year we went to San Diego that was probably my favorite trip. We usually end up going to Florida and that is really nice too.
4. You hit .429 with 2 HRs and 6 RBIs in the Frost Classic. What kind of confidence does that give you having success early in the season?
It gives me a lot of confidence, especially being my last year, to have more success the rest of the season. And coming back from injury, it’s good to have success.
5. At times in your career you have played second base, shortstop and outfield. How did you become so versatile and do you have a favorite position?
When I started off at nine years old, my coach basically taught me every position except pitcher and catcher, so that’s how I became versatile. In high school I played second base, so I was always on the infield, but in travel ball I always played outfield. My two favorite positions are probably second base and center field.
6. Do you have a pre-game routine and if so, what is it?
I don’t really have a pre-game routine, but on the way to games I do like to listen to music, usually metal to get me going. I’m pretty superstitious, I don’t touch lines on the filed and in batter’s box I do the same thing every time I am up.
7. What are your goals and expectations for the rest of the season?
Individually, just to keep hitting well and to be a leader in center field. For the team, to just keep improving. I know we are going to be good this year; we have a lot of talent and a lot of young talent.
8. What has been your favorite moment as a student-athlete at UB?
Just the experience of being an athlete, meeting so many people and just the team in general. All of the girls get along really well, so it’s a lot of fun.
9. If you could play any other sport at UB, what and why?
Soccer. I love soccer, I played it in high school and it’s a great, competitive sport.
10. What do you like to do in your free time?
Well, I’m a graduate student so I study a lot. But other than that I just like to relax. I love movies, going out and getting coffee, things like that. And shopping, of course, I’m a girl so I love shopping.
